Having been relegated from the Bundesliga just the season prior, the side would fail to win promotion back at the first attempt, ultimately finishing 4 points off of an automatic promotion place, on 54 points. The side would also compete in the DFB Pokal, where they would be knocked out in the first round, following defeat to SC Verl, losing 6-5 on penalties.

Players to play for the side this season included the likes of Max Eberl, former Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin, and new signing Arie Van Lent, who would finish as the club's top scorer, with 19 league goals, which would incidentally make him the 2nd top scorer in the 2.Bundesliga too.
