They would ultimately finish 3 points behind league winners Sturm Graz, who topped the division on 73 points, despite losing more games than 2nd placed Wien, with 9 defeats compared to Rapids 4. It was ultimately draws that cost Rapid the title this year, with 13 of their 36 league games being stalemate, including 2 draws to their rivals Austria Wien.

In domestic competition, the side would reach the semi finals of the Austrian Cup, before a 2-0 defeat to LASK Linz, having decimated all their previous opponents, scoring 20 goals in the 4 round before this! In the UEFA Cup, the side would reach the 1st round, having beaten Omonia Nicosia in qualifying, before defeat to French side Girondins Bordeaux, losing 3-2 on aggregate.

Players to play for the side this season included the likes of Oliver Freund, Gerd Wimmer, and Rene Wagner, who finished as the club's top scorer with 15 goals in all competitions.
